I have always had a strong connection with the sea and this is reflected in my work. My attraction to the industrial seascape - including metal hulls, rusting nails and weathered boards - was sparked while living in port towns. The process of layering, scraping and shaping the paint allows me to play with both surface and depth and explore the tension between formal structure and the element of chance. Although the overall aesthetic is my strongest guide symbolism and metaphors also play a part; lighthouses, anchors, ports, welded signage, plimsol lines, nautical maps and, more recently, sailor tattoos suggesting navigation, safety, survival and a sense of place.
